Finding The Picture by Phil Malpas and Clive Minnitt is the third in the Light & Land group of books. It is a masterclass in photographic composition, a subject that I am becoming evermore interested in.
The book is well presented with an extensive collection of images from around the world. A vast majority of these images fall under the "landscape" umbrella but there are sufficient, alternative photographs to please all but the most critical of readers.
Each of the pictures commands a full page with a subsequent thumbnail, attached to which are short paragraphs written by the authors, explaining what inspired them to take the image, how they approached taking it and what equipment they used. It was enlightening to see that the authors, in the main, used what I would class as everyday camera's and not large and medium format kits. This does not dumb down the book in any way as their explanations are rich in fascinating content.
I absolutely loved reading Finding The Picture. Each page contains excellent photographs and the explanations really made me think. In fact I ended up forming a mental critique of the images which I am sure will be reflected in my future photography.
Finding The Picture will suit everyone with an interest in photography. Whilst it provides interesting lessons in composition, it also includes dozens of beautiful photographs to please all. My copy sits as a coffee table treat that I find myself dipping into whenever I feel the need to be inspired and with the festive season fast approaching, it will also make for an excellent gift .
